Living well—is something we all strive for, but what does it really mean? For a long time, I thought living well was about achieving big things: career success, financial stability, a perfectly curated life. But the more I experience, the more I realize that living well isn’t about any of those things on their own. It’s about balance, presence, and learning to enjoy the journey, not just the destination.
One of the biggest shifts I’ve made in my mindset is moving away from the idea that life has to be perfect to be fulfilling. Life will never be perfect. There will always be something—a stressful project at work, a health concern, or just one of those weeks where everything feels off. But living well is about how we navigate those moments and how we take care of ourselves in the process.
For me, living well comes down to a few key principles:
1. Prioritizing Health in All Its Forms
Physical, mental, emotional—each aspect of health plays a huge role in my ability to live well. A few years ago, I made a conscious effort to tune in more closely to my body and mind. I started incorporating more movement into my day, even if it was just a short walk outside. I paid more attention to what I ate, not in a restrictive way, but in a way that helped me feel energized and strong. And perhaps most importantly, I learned the value of rest—not just sleep, but real rest. Time to unwind, unplug, and let go of the constant need to be “on.”
Mental health became a bigger focus, too. I started talking about things that weighed on me rather than bottling them up, and I sought out practices that helped me stay grounded—like meditation, reading, and simply giving myself permission to pause.
2. Connecting with Others
Living well isn’t just about what we do for ourselves; it’s also about the relationships we nurture. Whether it’s spending quality time with friends and family or connecting with new people who inspire and uplift me, I’ve realized how important it is to cultivate meaningful connections. It's easy to get caught up in the day-to-day hustle and forget to check in with the people who matter most, but living well means prioritizing those relationships. Even a simple message or a quick coffee can make all the difference.
3. Slowing Down and Savoring the Present
One thing that’s helped me immensely is learning to slow down. We live in a world that’s constantly pushing us to go faster, achieve more, and stay busy. But in the rush to do it all, we can miss out on the beauty of the present moment. Living well, for me, is about slowing down enough to notice the small things—like the warmth of the sun on my face, the sound of laughter, or the feeling of accomplishment after a productive day.
Slowing down also means being intentional with my time. I’ve started making room for hobbies and activities that bring me joy, like painting, reading, writing, or simply sitting with a cup of tea and my thoughts.
4. Embracing Imperfection
I used to think living well meant having everything under control, but life doesn’t work that way. It’s messy, unpredictable, and full of twists and turns. Instead of fighting that, I’m learning to embrace it. Living well is about accepting that not every day will be perfect, but there’s beauty in the chaos. I’m learning to let go of the need to have it all figured out and to be okay with the unknown.
5. Finding Purpose in the Everyday
Living well is also about finding purpose—not just in the big, life-changing moments, but in the everyday. I’ve learned that purpose isn’t always about grand achievements; it can be found in the little things, like helping someone out, learning something new, or simply showing up as my best self. Purpose can be quiet, yet deeply fulfilling.
Ultimately, living well isn’t something I’ve ‘figured out.’ It’s a process, a practice, and something I continue to learn and grow into. But the more I lean into these principles, the more I realize that living well isn’t about perfection—it’s about being present, finding joy in the ordinary, and making space for what truly matters.
Here’s to living well, in all its beautiful imperfection.
